Splendour of the Seas Rescue

Today I have an image taken in December 1999. At first look, it appears to be a few people in silhouette, watching the sunrise in the Caribbean. Unfortunately, it’s more dramatic than that. We are searching for one missing person from a 3,000 ton cargo ship that sank a few hours before. We had already rescued 11 people from two life rafts, but the Captain of the ship was not among them. That was the person we had been looking for all night. The rest of this story can be read at Splendour of the Seas Rescue.

Life at sea can be beautiful, but it can also be difficult when things like this happen. Although we usually don't know others we meet at sea, if they are in distress we will do whatever possible to help them. Personally, I have lost family members, colleagues, and friends at sea. It is never easy.

A very sad outcome, but wonderful that 11 were rescued.
